BTS ‘Love Yourself: Tear’ is the First K-Pop Album to Debut No. 1 on Billboard 200
Korean pop band BTS with their newest album Love Yourself: Tear earns the No. 1 spot at the Billboard 200 Chart, becoming the first Korean pop album to do so. More than 130,000 albums were sold in one week since it’s launch last May 18, according to Billboard.
Love Yourself: Tear is only the second K-pop album to reach the Billboard 200 Top 10, the first being another by BTS – Love Yourself: Her. The latter earned the 7th spot on the Billboard 200 last 2017.
As of May 19, only one day after the launch of Love Yourself: Her, the album secured its place on the iTunes top album charts in 65 different countries. One song from the album called Fake Love landed No. 1 in 52 countries, according to SBS. Fake Love also achieved an ‘all-kill’, topping all daily music charts in Korea and even on the country’s real-time charts.
BTS’s newest hit is the first album sung mostly in the Korean language to top the charts in 12 years.
Even Post Malone’s Beerpongs & Bentleys fell to the No. 2 spot after three whole weeks since BTS’ Love Yourself: Tear debut. However, as Rolling Stones notes, the top spot might only last a week for the Korean pop supergroup as it makes way for Shawn Mendes’s self-titled LP, projected to become No. 1 at the Billboard 200 in the next weeks to come.
